Oamaru Stone – The longest-lasting coastal cladding

A dream of many Kiwis is to build a house on the coast. However, a quick look around will show you that the ocean environment can be hard on buildings. But not the ones clad in Oamaru Stone – they stand the test of time better than anything.

In this article we’ll cover

  • Why Oamaru Stone is the ideal cladding for coastal buildings
  • How to keep Oamaru Stone looking good as new
  • Your options for cladding in Oamaru Stone

If you want to see how long Oamaru Stone lasts in a coastal environment, just take a look at the magnificent Victorian-era buildings on the Oamaru waterfront that are still standing strong after 150 years of life beside the sea. Apart from natural greying of the stone, they’re as solid and weatherproof today as when they were first constructed in the 1870s.

Compared to timber or metal, there’s actually no comparison at all. Beside the ocean, Oamaru Stone cladding will outlast anything else by decades (and probably centuries!).

Oamaru limestone stands the test of time on the coast because of its dense calcium carbonate composition. While our limestone is soft and easy to cut when we first quarry it, it quickly hardens when it’s exposed to the air, and the natural defensive shield it forms when Oamaru Stone gets wet adds to its long-term weather resistance.

Oamaru Stone’s density and high thermal mass also have other benefits for coastal cladding. Its low moisture absorbency resists damage from freezing and thawing, and its excellent natural thermal insulation properties make Oamaru Stone ideal for building in areas that endure extreme temperature variations. For example, coastal Canterbury can be a scorching 35° one day, and with the arrival of a southerly, plummet to a chilly 10° the next.

Some people like the way that Oamaru Stone ages naturally over the years to a greyer tone from white when it’s newly quarried. Letting it age is no disadvantage to its coastal weather-resistant properties, but if you want to retain the classic bright white look, then we recommend applying a new coat of sealant every six to eight years.

Because Oamaru Stone is so easy to work with when we first quarry it, we’re able to produce limestone cladding in a wide range of styles, finishes and textures, in two colours. Read our recent article on Oamaru Stone cladding options for inspiration for your coastal building or renovation.
