With Oamaru Stone, the only limit is your imagination

One of the most exciting things about working at Oamaru Stone is that we get to collaborate with inspiring builders, architects and homeowners from all over New Zealand, on some very cool projects.

This month we’re showcasing some bespoke architectural and interior stonework shaped by our amazing CNC machine, which can transform immense blocks of stone into virtually anything you can envisage.

What is a CNC machine?

CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control. Basically it’s a robot with cutting tools for hands that takes its instructions from a computer programme.

The first step to creating an item using CNC to shape Oamaru Stone into a custom design is creating a CAD (Computer Aided Design) model. The CAD model is then converted to a CNC programme which directs the movement of the cutting tools on the machine. The amount of control we have using this technology is amazing, and we can produce extremely complex, finely detailed designs quickly and easily. Virtually the only constraint on what we can create with our CNC shaping machine is the weight of the finished piece. Stone is heavy, so transport and handling on-site has to be considered.

The flipside is that CNC shaping machinery is expensive and takes a lot of skill to programme, which is why Oamaru Stone is alone in doing significant CNC work with stone in New Zealand.

Before CNC came along, carving stone was a long, slow process. Now when you come to us with an idea we can turn it into reality with lead times that make CNC shaped stone an ideal creative material for all sorts of interior and exterior features.

Already we’re producing lots of columns and frames for exterior windows and doors, but because of the natural softness and warmth of Oamaru Stone it works just as well inside. That’s why we’re creating more interior design elements, from textured feature walls to ornate trim. Oamaru Stone makes a strong statement whichever way it’s used – and even more so when it’s custom designed and CNC shaped for special projects.
